How Tech Ceos Can Improve Workplace Productivity

Uncovering Relational Productivity

Zoom and Gong were effective during the epidemic because they produced settings that increased relational productivity and its three underlying “relational complementarities.” In economics, complementarity refers to how one element in production raises the value of another, or how things have greater value when utilized together rather than individually. (A dishwasher and detergent, for instance, demonstrate complementarity.) Relational complementarities similarly explain how one person’s actions may boost the contribution of others.

The epidemic revealed that relationship complementarities depend far more on deliberate, consistent connection than on proximity. Proximity is the tip of the iceberg of human contact. It gives pleasant but poor alternatives for real connectivity. We assume we understand one another since we share the same office. We assume the team is listening since we’re all at the same table. We assume we know a coworker because of chance meetings at the coffee machine.

The lockdowns eliminated these alternatives and brought into light those organizations that prioritized the form above the content of human interaction. When the replacements went, so did production. But in companies where complementarities were already strong and leaders deliberately promoted them, productivity rose.

The three complementarities that underpin relational productivity are vertical (management to employee), horizontal (employee to employee), and radial (employee to the company) (employee to the organization). Vertical complementarity describes the improved productivity achieved by the efficient use of authority. Horizontal complementarity focuses on the economic advantage provided by the convergence of specializations.

Radial complementarity describes the rise in productivity that comes when people feel a sense of belonging to something greater than themselves. Collectively, these complementarities, more than any enabling technology such as Zoom, multiply human effort such that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Traditional organizations have concentrated on the vertical dimension. The most visible example is the strong connection between salary and promotion. But the epidemic demonstrated that the horizontal and radial complementarities offer huge, mainly untapped potential to enhance productivity. Perhaps personnel that activate horizontal and radial complementarities should earn considerably greater remuneration, even if they don’t follow the normal path of advancing through the ranks.

When horizontal complementarities are strong, work behavior improves in three ways:

  • Creating More Shots on Goal. Employees with various expertise, backgrounds, and experiences provide varied views to an issue.
